We set off to work with Bill with the aim of creating a Charis build which will stretch one's dollar value with the best we can curate tonally for a versatile spruce and rosewood combination.

The result of choice was a Charis SJ built with rare Swiss alpine spruce top and gorgeous East Indian rosewood (and another similar piece in short scale).

Swiss alpine spruce was chosen for the top as it has been prized by luthiers for its quick response and great headroom. This light weight top projects harmonic complexity and offers fullness at the lower end of the dynamic range, allowing for rich bell-like tones across a wide tonal spectrum. Aesthetically, It enjoys the advantage of a gorgeous colour and uniformity in grain over adirondack red spruce tops, another Holy Grail of topwoods for steel-string guitars.

Indian rosewood was chosen for the back and sides as they have an extremely high velocity of sound and a broad range of overtones. In particular, they contribute to a strong and complex bottom end which imparts an overall warmth to the tone of a guitar. Often underrated due to its wide availability, this tonewood can be super-charged in the hands of the right luthier.

Bill Wise has once again surprised us with his finesse in his craft. Playing one of these will certainly redefine ones' stereotype of indian rosewood guitars. You will be hard-pressed to differentiate this tonally in a blind test from countless other guitars built with supposedly more "premium rosewood". Expect a super-charged tone in a understated guitar with this build.

All our Charis guitars are built with only AAAA and Mastergrade woods. Expect luxurious appointments and an elegant florentine cutaway on every piece.
