This very special guitar is part of Martin’s “Guitar Of The Month Series” in 1990. Only 100 pieces were made then and it is the closest one can get to a prewar D-28 today without a heavy price tag. What makes this guitar even more special is the near 30 years of aging on the Brazilian rosewood, making this easily one of the best sounding dreadnoughts we have ever come across over the past decade.
This guitar comes in premium sitka spruce top and a lovely set of Brazilian rosewood. It is made to the overall specifications of a prewar D-28 with an interior label signed by C.F. Martin IV. To further sweeten the package, this consigned guitar is in near mint condition despite its age and comes with a period correct Martin hardcase owned by Bob Dylan himself with certification included.
In 1969, Martin stopped using Brazilian rosewood as it got scarce and made the switched to Indian rosewood. Brazilian rosewood was subsequently added to the CITES treaty in 1992, strictly banning its exportation which resulted in today’s use of Brazilian Rosewood being only limited to special edition or custom shop guitars.
This is a truly memorable guitar which will certainly delight its owner. With a recent 2017 release of 50 Brazilian rosewood D-28s carrying a street price of USD$16000 before shipping and tax, we can only expect these guitars to appreciate in value over time.
